What Is Your Intention?
By Reverend Nadia Meyer

Ever since the doors of Spiritual Bizness opened in Winston Salem, there has been an annual intention setting workshop. While this workshop is usually held at the beginning of the year, any time of year is fine. You might choose to dedicate the time around your birthday for setting new intentions - a personal new year’s ritual. Spring could also be a good time to create new growth for your life. Regardless of when you choose, if you haven’t yet attempted intention setting, you might be surprised to find out how powerful this tool can be.

What would you say if you heard that you were the creator of your reality? Would you respond with, “Sure, I know that” and go about your world, or would you stop for a moment and consider what you want to create? Perhaps you would like to have better health in the form of weight loss and workouts. Perhaps you would decide to have more money, or time for your family, hobbies, or projects. Maybe you would like to take a trip, or grow your sales volume. All of these things are available to you. The power of your thoughts, your imagination, and your creativity is amazing.

Everything you achieve, or fail to achieve, has direct correlation to your thoughts. You cannot manifest what you cannot conceive, so the easiest way to start using intention is to think of it like planting a seed in your thoughts. First you want to consider what you are going to grow. What do you want to see manifest? Now, whether you tend that seed lovingly, or allow it to be overgrown by weed-like thoughts that keep you from your best self, is up to you.

Mystics have said for ages, and many scientists now agree, that each of us creates our reality by virtue of the thoughts we hold habitually in our mind. Psychologists agree that it takes approximately twenty-one days to break a habit. So what we need to consider is whether our habitual thoughts are healthy. One way to assess this is to recognize whether you are happy with your life. If there are things you’d like to change, then you will probably need to change the way you think about those things.

Replacing old ways of thinking with new ones can be tricky because many of these thoughts are not obvious or conscious. Ideas from our upbringing ? our families, schools, churches, prior experiences - influence the way we think. Sometimes the influences are positive, other times not.

Often thoughts run in the background, like programs on a computer. When we bring a thought to the forefront of our consciousness, such as “I really need to quit smoking,” our logical mind will agree, while our habitual thinking will override it with “Yeah, I know but I cannot face it right now.” and the thought disappears back into lurk mode. The struggle is that in this lurk mode our habitual thoughts often sabotage what we intend for ourselves. Some examples: Someone with a background thought that says she is fat will struggle - no matter how thin or fit she gets - with seeing her body's true beauty until she rids herself of that conditioned thought. Someone who doesn’t love himself will find it difficult to create a healthy relationship. Someone who believes there isn’t enough will struggle to experience prosperity.

You may believe your thoughts are secret or easily hidden. They may even seem hidden to you, but really they aren’t. You become what you think. If you want to know what your habitual thoughts are, look at the circumstance of your life. With some fair self-observation it will become clear. A person weakens herself by maintaining negative thinking, and uplifts herself by encouraging positivity in her mind. Putting your attention on your way of thinking will help you greatly in your intentions.

Intending can be thought of as inward tending. Are you being the very best you possible? Does what you’re intending make you feel GOOD? Are you expressing gratitude, kindness, and love through your being? Are you letting yourself be free of fear? This is all part of getting in sync with the force of intention. If you choose an intention, and align yourself with what you intend, you will find it is really very simple to manifest.

There’s only one rule about intending - you can only intend for yourself. Why? Because it’s simply rude to intend for someone else (no matter how well meaning) and “rude” wouldn’t line up very well now would it? If someone desires the same thing as you want for her, then it is far more respectful to support her fully in his intentions for herself.

Participants here have created all sorts of wonderful things for themselves. From trips to foreign lands, to healing from cancer, they have understood through meditation, healing, and spiritual counsel, that nothing is impossible if they are willing to open up and receive.

Of course along with great power comes great responsibility. It isn’t always easy to realize we are in charge. What about the bad stuff? The fertilizer? Well, truth is, we create that too. Again it comes back to our thoughts and our inward tending. If we avoid our responsibility by blaming circumstances or other people for our problems, we give up our power.

You are the gardener of your life - what will you grow? Whether you are choosing lofty spiritual ideals as your intention or more simplistic material gains makes no difference. The universe is ready with the means to create it. Why wouldn’t the universe want you to be happy? Your joy feeds and serves the good of all. If you don’t believe, it’s okay - try it anyway. Remember, nothing comes to pass until someone thinks of it, and intends it into manifestation.
