Sacred Geometry: The Blueprint of Creation

Before I go any further, let me assure you that this article is not about the geometry presented in math class. Instead, what I hope to share with you is a connection between geometry and All That Is … in essence, the Blueprint of Creation. While this may be a bold statement, I believe you will agree after reading the few words that follow. As this can be a deep subject, I will stick to the basics. Hopefully, that will be enough to spark an interest and inspire you to explore the subject further on your own.

So, just how is it that sacred geometry can be referred to as the Blueprint of Creation? Well, at the core of sacred geometry are a ratio, a numerical sequence, and five geometric shapes. 

The ratio is referred to as the phi (pronounced fee) ratio. It is 1 to 1.618. This ratio is unique in that it describes the only relationship possible between two uneven divisions of a whole unit of measure in which the smaller portion has the same relationship to the larger portion as the larger portion has to the whole. An example of how this ratio is found in human form is if you were to measure from the fingertips to the wrist and then from the wrist to the elbow of 100 people, on average, the distance from the fingertips to the wrist would be .618 of the distance from the wrist to the elbow. In addition, the distance from the wrist to the elbow would be .618 of the distance from the elbow to the fingertips. This phi ratio is found throughout the human body. With close examination of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, you will notice lines crossing the man’s body, his hands, and even his face. With this work, da Vinci is illustrating how this ratio applies to human form. However, it doesn’t stop there. The phi ratio is found throughout nature. It is found in the spacing of the fins on a fish, the segments of an insect’s body and even in the distance between the planets and sun within our solar system. For those planets with more than one moon orbiting them, this ratio is found between those moons. Truly, it is no exaggeration when I say the phi ratio is found within all we know. 

The sequence of numbers that ties into all of this is called the Fibonacci series. In short, this series of numbers originally came from the observation of breeding patterns of rabbits. In essence, adding two numbers and then adding the highest of the numbers to the sum and then repeating the process create the series. It looks as follows; 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21, 34, 55 … to infinity. The interesting part is that if you take this out twelve steps and then divide the twelfth sum by the highest number (in this case 377 divided by 233) you will get 1.618, back to phi. Regardless of what two numbers you start with, they could be absolutely any two numbers, you will get 1.618 when you divide the twelfth sum by the highest number used to arrive at it. 

If you were to draw a squared spiral on a piece of graph paper using this sequence, you would draw a line that is one square long, then to the right one square, to the right two squares, to the right three squares, then five squares, eight squares, thirteen squares, etc. You get the idea. Ok now, if you were to round this spiral out, you would see a familiar shape. It is the spiral seen emanating from the center of our galaxy. It is the spiral found in a nautilus shell, the center of a sunflower, in a pinecone, and so forth. This spiral can even be found in human form. It is in our fingerprints, the curvature of our ears, a clenched fist, and the twin helix of our DNA.

These principles have been used in architecture, art, cities, and grids between sacred places since before our recorded time. Why? It is because the ancients were on to something. They knew that by incorporating certain proportion into their surroundings they were in alignment with Creation itself. They knew if they built a structure using sacred geometry a certain connection would be created simply by the space itself, thus setting the stage for even greater things to take place. These principles were closely guarded secrets of groups such as the Freemasons because it was thought the power was too great to be available to the common man. As Masons, the founding fathers of our country used sacred geometry extensively in the design and layout of Washington, DC. They even hid this secret connection to Creation in plain view on our flag. 

As we evolve into a higher level of consciousness, perhaps it is time to apply that same evolution to our environment. This can be done in the design of our buildings. It can be done with the art we surround ourselves with, or with the tools we use in healing. We can even bring the energies of sacred geometry into our environment with the simple placement of stones. This is something I have done quite often and the results have been remarkable. As with all things, let your heart be your guide. A simple web search will give you years worth of material to study. There are also excellent books on the subject. I assure you, enhancing your sacred space with sacred geometry will expand the energies in ways we cannot fully understand at this point of our evolution. Maybe that’s why it is a part of the Great Mystery. 

And I didn’t even get to the five geometric shapes, known as Platonic Solids … perhaps another time.
